The Sephardic Poor of Amsterdam and London

THE AMSTERDAM AND LONDON POOR

After the Holidays, Sephardic World is back!

The popular conception is that Sephardim in Amsterdam and London were rich. Sadly this is not the case. This week we shall discuss impoverished Sephardim - maybe half the community - and how the community leaders managed the situation. There is a wealth of records in the archives dealing with the Sephardic poor, including the support they received from the congregations, including at festivals, and how they were managed and disciplined.

One solution was to put poor people on a boat, and send them somewhere else! This is how many of our ancestors reached the places they later called home. Ton has been studying the 'Despacho' records from Amsterdam and London.

The talk will later be uploaded to: https://www.youtube.com/c/SephardicGenealogyAndHistory

New online Jewish genealogy classes

A free new online Jewish genealogy and history group is launching on Sunday 3rd May 2020, focused on Sephardim and also including the universal Jewish experience.

Enjoy your time at home exploring your family history. Hosted on Zoom by two of the best-known names in Sephardic genealogy, Ton Tielen and David Mendoza. We will be hosting fun and informative seminars, as well as publishing a regular email newsletter. The entire service is free, although we are hoping to find sponsors.

Our first conversation on Sunday 3rd May 2020 will explore the Amsterdam archives, including synagogue records dating back to 1615 and other free online resources. Future meetings will cover topics as varied as interviews, family histories and the Inquisition.

There will be a weekly broadcast on Sundays (excluding Jewish holidays) at: 21:00 Israel time; 20:00 Paris time; 19:00 London time; 14:00 EST; and 11:00 PT.   Please share with anyone who may be interested! 2015 - The Year of Sephardic Genealogy

Late 2014 saw online skirmishing between two different approaches to Sephardic genealogy. On one side were Sephardic genealogists and academics demanding that genealogy be evidence-based. On the other was what we can describe as Ashkenazi 'Sephardic experts' who seek to understand the Sephardic experience through traditional fictional Ashkenazi representations of Sephardim. What the second group may have lacked in evidence was more than compensated by their numbers.

2015 will be an interesting year for Jewish genealogy.
